  • internal evaluation (speaker steps back from narrative to comment things in the same time frame as narrative) / external evaluation (steps back to express attitude towards event).

goodwin’s story structure

A

interactional approach - 6 interactional techniques:
- story preface (signal the speaker wants to tell story and invites listeners)
- story solicit (response to let them know that they want to listen), preliminary to the story (who, where, what, why)
- story action (main body of text)
- story climax (conclusion of narrative)
- story appreciation (audience reaction/response)
Speaker may add parentheses for more background info.
