Discipline and Theoretical Perspectives Flashcards
structural-functionalist view of society (macro theory)
it is composed of interrelated parts that work together to maintain stability
social-conflict view of society (macro theory)
society is characterized by social inequality. social life is a struggle for scarce resources.
symbolic-Interaction view of society (micro theory)
composed of symbols. Humans attach meaning to these symbols through interaction
How are social relationships constructed
Human beings, through their interaction with each other, develop an understanding of what relationships are, we aren’t
important to talk about the terms of the romantic relationship
What “Are” we, how will we treat each other, what are our boundaries
Social Construction Reality
What really happens in a relationship doesn’t matter as much as what has been perceived. WE CREATE our own reality, whether its being “in love”, “soul mates” or being in an abusive relationship or fighting
self
a process in which we construct a sense of who we are through interaction with others
social exchange theory
individuals hover towards “greatest reward to fewest costs” relationship
=>payoff includes emotional rewards, sexual satisfaction, monetary security
Views relationships as exchanges of property (explains why we get jealous when someone flirts with our significant other, and break ups)
family systems theory
views the family as an emotional unit and uses systems thinkings to describe complex interactions within it
=>developed by Murray Bowen
=>says individuals can’t be understood in isolation from one another but as a part of their family
=>families are systems of interconnected and interdependent individuals, none of whom can be understood in isolation from the system
=>asks ppl to draw out their family social network, labeling it with key names, events, and emotional/social relationships to see patterns of behavioral dysfunction
