Discipline 1 - Focus on the Wildy Important Goal Flashcards
The first discipline says to do what with your goals?
Focus on less goals (ie, the ones that matter most),
to be able to execute them with excellence
The inability of leaders to do what… , is a significant problem in getting things done.
Focus
The human brain works best when..
focusing on one thing at a time.
What happens to all the other goals that aren’t designated as a WIG?
They sit on the backburner until they become a high enough priority to become a WIG, (which for some goals may never happen).
There will always be more good ideas than…
capacity to execute.
What is the suggested split of time spent on whirlwind vs WIGS?
80% whirlwind, 20% WIGS
What is required in order to achieve the focus to achieve WIGS?
saying no to good ideas.
What are the 2 focus traps?
- Having to say no to good ideas
2. Trying to turn everything in the whirlwind into a WIG.
Unless success can be achieved with stroke of the pen you are going to need to…
change the behaviour of your team.
A WIG is a goal that can make…
all the difference.
What is the great question to ask in order to work out your wig?
If every other area of the business stayed the same what is the one area where change would have the biggest impact?
Your WIG will come from one of 2 categories..?
- From the whirlwind
2. from outside of the whirlwind
If a WIG is coming from outside of the whirlwind, what is it generally about?
Strategic repositioning
What is the aim of a WIG beyond just achieving it?
To go back into the whirlwind as a new higher level of ongoing team performance
What are the 4 rules of Discipline No.1 Focus.?
- No team to focus on more than 2 WIGS at the same time,.
- The battles must win the war.
- Senior leaders can veto but not dictate team WIGS
- All WIGS must have a finish line in the form of X to Y by when.
What happens when the strategy is top down only?
There is a lack of buy in, engagement and ownership. and execution suffers.
a WIG is not a strategy. It is a _______ ____ within a ________ ____ _____.
tactical goal
limited time frame
Disciplne 1 requires you to translate your strategy from _______ to _______. From vague _______ to set of _______ ______ _____.
concepts
targets
intent
specific finish lines
It can take _______ ______ to identify the lead measures with the most leverage
intense effort
What is the Moneyball example of using data to produce great results? ie the leads measures that contribute to runs that win games.
- Oakland Athletics Baseball team
- Sandy Anderson General Manage
- Billy Beane Assist manager
- Used data of best on base players, they could get on base’s and push the other players home.
- They weren’t famous or glamorous but it worked and they were cheap.
- The poorest team in the league won the division title.
- For a decade the Oakland A’s had the 5th best record in the major league despite ranking 24th out of 30 in terms of player salaries.
What was Billy Bean tracking and looking for before he would recruit players? What was the high leverage lead measure? What movie was this story turned into?
- the on base record of players, if was the lead measure that the players could influence and it was predictive of getting runs, which was predictive of winning games.
- the on base record of players
- Moneyball
Describe the example of Young Brothers Construction,
•the problem they had
• and how they reduced the incident rate.
• Define the WIG and the lead and lag measures which they felt would be most influenceable and predictive
• What was required to get this Lead Data?
• How were they able to manage to do this?
• What was the result?
The problem, an increasing number of injuries, leading to hurt staff, lost time, rising premiums, risk of losing safety rating.
• WIG to reduce safety incidents from 7% to 1%
• The LEAD Measure: Compliance to safety standards ie, boots, hard hats, gloves etc.
• To get the lead data, the foreman of each crew would have to walk around and observe their crews despite all the pressures of the whirlwind
• They were able to track this because it was their only WIG it was the only critical additional thing that was being asked of them so with some effort it was achievable.
• The result: Within one year the company had achieved the best safety record in the companies 31 year history but it wasn’t easy.
What is the response when people say 'those lead measures will take too much work' • • • • •
- you must pay the price to track the lead measures
- if your serious about your WIG you simply have to create a way to track the lead measures
- without tracking the leads you aren’t clear on what is actually happening
- without tracking the leads its much harder to see the correlation between an activity and its impact on the LAG measure
- the data on leads helps give you leverage
What its the pilot checklist lead measure example. year person problem solution
- 1935
- A experienced test pilot crashed an enormous plane because of simple human error, he forgot a critical step
- pilots got together and created. are flight checklist
- it was the perfect high leverage lead measure, a few minutes, very influenceable (easy to do) and highly predictive of a safe flight (the LAG measure).
