Disaccharides Flashcards
What are disaccharides made up of?
2 monosaccharides bonded together by a glycosidic bond.
What reaction forms disaccharides?
Condensation reaction.
Maltose equation?
Glucose + Glucose –> Maltose + Water
Sucrose equation?
Glucose + Fructose –> Sucrose + Water
Lactose equation?
Glucose + Galactose –> Lactose + Water
What is a condensation reaction?
Joining two molecules together by removing water.
What is a hydrolysis reaction?
Splitting apart molecules through the addition of water.
When we join two glucose molecules together to form a disaccharide what happens?
An Oxygen is left behind and H2O is produced. It becomes a 1,4 glycosidic bond.
When are polymers hydrolysed in the body into monomers?
Digestion - starch is hydrolysed into glucose.
What catalyses hydrolysis in the body?
Glycogenolysis - stores of glycogen are hydrolysed back into glucose when blood sugar levels drop.
