disability identities Flashcards
Oliver
disabled people are treated as victims and incapable and in need of care and that’s how people act differently around them due to the public perception of disabled people. The definition of disability and impairment;
Disability- a restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability
impairment - Any loss or abnormality of psychological on anatomical function or structure.
Scrambler
media portrays disbaled people as work shy,scroungers, and too lazy to work, which created a negative image.
Murugami
disabled person has the ability to construct a self-identity that accepts their impairment but is independent of it. Meaning they see themselves as a person first and their disability as a characteristic.
Ridley
Is a comedian who has cerebral palsy. In a study, it showed that two-thirds of people felt awkward when talking to disabled people.
Survey also suggests that 43% of people don’t know a disabled person which is unlikely.
The social model
Focus on social and physical barriers to inclusion that may exist such as a design of buildings and public space that deny access to those with mobility problems or discriminatory attitude and practice against those with disabilities. Views that disability is socially constructed since it rests on the assumption of what is normal or ‘abnormal’.
Shakespeare
disabled people are socialised into seeing themselves as a victim and people with impairments may accept a victim mentality because they can use it as a reason for their failure. Obstacles in forming positive identity, as in the media there is a lack of positive role models in the public life and in the media and obliged bodied society often then react to disabled people with pity, avoidance, and awkwardness
the medical model
See disability as a medical problem and focus on the limitation caused by the impairment and has long been the approach society has taken. This approach defines a person by their impairment or disability, this leads to a ‘victim-blaming’ mentality, in that the problem lies with the disabled individual rather than a society that has not met their needs.
