Disability and Leading Signs in Respiratory Disease Flashcards
Normal ppO2 of a person at sea level
10-12 kPa
Normal ppCO2 of a person at sea level
3.5-5.5 kPa
What is cardiomyopathy?
weakness in heart muscle
Routine tests for someone who might have asthma
spirometry FeNO (exhaled nitric oxide) high: suggesrs inflammation PEFR monitoring IgE skin prick eosinophil count
If an asthma attack was life-threatening what would be heard upon asculatation?
nothing - no air able to pass through airways
How to differentiate between an asthma attack and hyperventilation syndrome?
hyperventilating - not usually a wheeze
What must you be aware of when giving O2 to a patient?
liklihood of having hypoxic ventilatory drive - lots of O2 will cause them to breathe less
Treatments for COPD
nondrug: smoking cessation, vaccination
drug: bronchodilators - beta2agonists, antimuscarinic agents; inhaled steroids; mucolytics
lung volume reduction surgery
What is dyspnoea?
difficulty breathing
What is mitral stenosis
narrowing of mitral valve
What is pleuritic chest pain?
pain when coughing
How to differentiate between pulmonary embolus from pneumothorax
pneumothorax - don’t cough up blood
What is type 2 respiratory failure?
inadequate alveolar ventilation
How to differentiate between bronchiectasis and pneumonia?
bronchiectasis - more long term condition
What is bronchial breathing?
tubular, hollow sounds in large airways
