Partial Disability
can perform one or more important duties of their occupation, but not all. The result of recovery from Total Disability where the insured can return to work, but not in the former capacity.
Total Disability
Totally disabled if they cannot perform their own job for the first two years after onset of sickness or injury for two years.
To continue benefits the insured must prove that they are capable of performing ANY job. (Loss of Earnings Test)
Protects against loss of NET earned income (Gross = before taxes). Insures from total disability due to perils of sickness or accident by replacing maximum of your present net income.
Residual Disability
Formerly partial disability, now called “residual” disability. The insured returns to work but cannot earn as much as they did before becoming disabled.
Presumptive Disability
Total disability that is presumed in cases involving loss of sight, hearing, speech or the loss of any two limbs.
Accidental Means Clause
Covers accidents only if the cause is unintentional and unforeseen. e.g. if the insured is working on his roof. He elects to jump down. Since he intended to jump, his injury could have been foreseen, and would not be covered.
Accidental Bodily Clause
Any injury that is the result of an accident is covered
Non-occupational Covers you only off the job
Occupational Coverage: Those not covered by Workers Comp (self-employed, sole proprietors, partners, independent contractors) should purchase this coverage
