Disabilities, Challenges, and Assistive Technologies: Theoretical Models of Disability Flashcards
Chapter 4.1 of the CPACC body of knowledge.
Name the 7 theoretical models of disability.
- Medical model
- Social model
- Biopsychosocial model
- Economic model
- Functional solutions model
- Social identity or Cultural assimilation model
- Charity model
How do you define the Medical model?
The Medical model views the disability as a “problem” of the individual. This leads to these persons feeling left out, as they are not the norm.
Name the strengths of the Medical model?
The model can address the biological sources of disabilities.
Name the weaknesses of the Medical model?
The model sees disability as a problem and seeks to cure the body, often overlooking the broader sociopolitical constraints.
How do you define the Social model?
The social model of disability sees the issue of ‘disability’
as a socially created problem and a matter of the full integration of individuals into society.
Name the strengths of the Social model?
Places the disabling conditions in the environment and society in focus. Disability is not only a characteristic of a “broken” body.
Name the weaknesses of the Social model?
Tends to downplay the bodily aspects of disabilities too much.
How do you define the Biopsychosocial model?
It aims to combine the best points from the Medical and Social model to come to a more complex understanding of disabilities.
How do you define the Economic model?
The economic model of disability defines disability by a person’s inability to participate in work, according to Disabled World.
Name the strengths of the Economic model?
Recognizes the effects of disability by the persons inability to work.
Name the weaknesses of the Economic model?
Creates a legally defined view of people who are needy, which is stigmatizing.
How do you define the Functional solutions model?
A practical perspective that identifies the limitations due to disabilities with the intent to solve them through technological innovations.
Name the strengths of the Functional solutions model?
It is result-oriented.
Name the weaknesses of the Functional solutions model?
Not all solutions are developed with the end-user in mind, but by profit-driven entrepreneurs.
How do you define the Social identity or Cultural affiliation model?
People with disabilities gather a sense of belonging and personal identity from membership with a group of similar people.
