Directional Terms And Anatomical Planes Flashcards
What’s the letters stand for
A: Cranial- towards cranium (head)
B: Caudal- towards cauda (tail)
C: Rostral- in head region towards nose
D: Dorsal- towards back
E: Ventral- towards belly
F: Proximal- on a limb that is near limb attachment; towards body junction
G: Distal- on a limb that is near free end; away from body junction
What’s I and H
H: Lateral- directed away from midline axis
I: Medial- directed toward midline axis
What’s the letters stand for
A: Cranial: upper limb, towards cranium
B: Caudal- upper limb, towards cauda
C: Dorsal- cranial aspect of pes, below carpus and tarsus
H: Palmar- caudal aspect of forelimbs (front paws), below carpus
I: Plantar- caudal aspect of hindlimb (hind paws), below hock
What’s D and E stand for and what is contralateral and Ipsilateral
Contralateral- occurring/belonging on other side of body
Ipsilateral- occurring/belonging on same side of body
D: Unilateral- relating to one side of body/structure (L or R)
E: Bilateral- relating on both sides of body/structure
What’s A, B, C stand for
A: Axis- line/plane thru centre of body
B: Axial- towards axis
C: Abaxial- away from axis
What’s the terms
- Median Plane- divides the body thru the midline into equal parts
- Sagittal Plane- parallel to median plane, divides into unequal parts
What are the terms
- Transverse plane- perpendicular to median plane, divides body into cranial and caudal parts
- Frontal plane (dorsal)- perpendicular to median and transverse planes, divides body into cranial dorsal and ventral parts
What are the four broad body regions
- Head
- Neck/Cervical
- Trunk
- Tail
Name the 5 body regions and what they contain
Head: contains Cranial region (cranial bones) and Facial region (mandible)
Pelvic: contains bony pelvis, pelvic cavity and pelvic floor
Abdominal: lower digestive organs
Thoracic: separated by abdominal by the diaphragm, contains heart and lungs
Pectoral: region between fore limbs and chest area
