Standing straight with palms facing forward by its side
Anatomical Position
Makes up the main axis of the body
(head, neck, and trunk)
Axial
Attached to bodies axis
(appendiges or limbs)
Appendicular
Vertical plane that divides body into right and left pairs
Sagittal Plane
Sagittal plane that goes exactly down the middle
Median or Midsagittal Plane
All other sagittal planes that offset from the midline
Parasagittal Plane
Lies vertically and divides body into anterior and posterior parts
Frontal or Coronal Plane
Runs horizontally from right to left dividing the body into superior and inferior parts
Transverse or Horizontal or Cross Section Plane
Cuts made diagonally between horizontal and vertical planes
Oblique Plane
Toward the head or upper part of the body (above)
- head to abdomine
Superior or Cranial
Away from the head or toward the lower part of the body (below)
- naval to chin
Inferior or Caudal
Toward or at the front of the body (in front of)
- breastbone to spine
Anterior or Ventral
Toward or at the back of the body (behind)
- heart to breastbone
Posterior or Dorsal
Toward or at the midline of the body (on the inner side of)
- heart to arm
Medial
Away from the midline of the body (on the outer side of)
- arms to chest
