Body Cavities Flashcards
Protects fragile nervous system organs and has 2 subdivisions (cranial and spinal)
Dorsal Cavity
In skull, encases the brain
Cranial Cavity
Within bony vertebral column, encases delicate spinal cord
Spinal or Vertebral Cavity
More anterior and larger of the closed body cavities and has 2 subdivisions (thoracic and abdominopelvic)
Ventral Cavity
Surrounded by ribs and muscles of chest, has 2 subdivisions (pleural and pericardial)
Thoracic Cavity
Enveloping a lung and medial mediastinum
Pleural Cavity
In mediastinum, encloses the heart and surrounds remaining thoracic organs (esophagus, trachea, etc)
Pericardial Cavity
By diaphragm, dome-shaped muscle important in breathing, has 2 subdivisions (abdominal and pelvic)
Abdominopelvic Cavity
Contains stomach, intestines, spleen, liver, etc
Abdominal Cavity
In bony pelvis, contains urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum
Pelvic Cavity
Mouth contains teeth and tongue
Oral Cavity
Continuous with the oral cavity opens to body exterior at anus
Digestive Cavity
Within and posterior to nose part of the respiratory system pathways
Nasal Cavity
In skull house eyes present in anterior position
Orbital Cavity
In skull medial to eardrums contains tiny bones that transmit sound vibrations to hearing receptors in the inner ear
Middle Ear Cavity
