physical h&w
relates to the functioning of the body and its systems. includes the physical capacity to perform daily activities and tasks
social h&w
is concerned with the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships with others as well as the ability to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations
emotional h&w
relates to the ability to express emotions and feelings in a positive way. involves the positive management and expression of emotional actions and reactions as well as the ability to display resilience.
mental h&w
the current state of wellbeing relating to the mind or brain and it also relates to the ability to think and process information
spiritual h&w
relates to ideas beliefs values and ethics that arise in the mind of human beings. includes the concepts of hope, peace and a sense of value or meaning of their place in the world.
WHO definition of h&w
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
limitations of WHO definition
- ‘complete’ is limiting because complete wellbeing is difficult and nearly impossible for most people
- doesn’t mention all of the dimensions
strengths of WHO definition
- acknowledges that absence of disease is only one aspect of health
- emphasizes that health is a positive concept
- considers more than just physical health
