Digestive System Parts Flashcards
Mouth - structure & function
This is where the process of digestion begins. Food is broken down, physically, into smaller pieces, and the enzyme amylase is released to begin the chemical breakdown of starch.
Oesophagus - structure & function
Peristalsis occurs in this organ, pushing food down this narrow tube using muscular contractions.
Stomach - structure & function
This J-shaped organ has muscular walls which churn the food, mixing it with gastric juices.
Small intestine - structure & function
This organ is the longest part of the digestive tract. It absorbs digested nutrients into the bloodstream and allow water and undigested waste to travel through.
Large intestine - structure & function
Water is absorbed in this organ, forming a solid material comprised of undigested waste.
Liver - structure & function
This is the body’s largest internal organ. It is a chemical factory which produces essential chemicals including bile.
