- caused by acid resistant bacteria attached to digestive tract wall

- chronic disease, can only be treated not cured
- TREATMENTS: special diet, medication to reduce pain, surgery to remove affected part of colon

crohns disease
A
- affects alimentary canal
- linked to problems with immune system
- patchy areas of inflammation, poor muscle development, thinner bones

- affects colon/rectum
- continuous area of inflammation
SYMPTOMS: cramps, abdominal pain, bloody stools

A
- liver inflammation caused by virus
HEPATITIS A: drinking contaminated water
HEPATITIS B: sexual contact
HEPATITIS C: contact with infected blood

cirrhosis
A
- irreversible replacement of healthy liver tissue with non functioning scar tissue
- caused by chronic alcoholism and hepatitis C
TREATMENT: liver can heal itself, liver transplant

- condition where body is unable to use glucose for energy
- CAUSES: develops when theres not enough insulin
- w/o insulin, glucose can’t get into cells

- caused by inadequate water intake, lack of good nerve and muscle function in bowel, poor diet
TREATMENT: increase fibre intake

A
- solid cancerous growth begins on inner surface of colon
starts in large intestine or rectum - develops from mushroom like growths, takes years to become cancerous
