A group of organs working together so our bodies can break down food to make energy
Ingestion
Food I’d taken in by the mouth
Digestion
Ingested food is broken down into smaller particles
Absorbtion
Digested food particles are absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells tissues and organs
Assimilation
Food is used by cells tissues and organs for energy growth and repair

Unabsorbed food is passed from the body
Physical digestion
Breaking down food using physical methods no chemical changes occur
Chemical digestion
Breaking down foods using enzymes and chemical reactions
Mouth
Food is chewed and mixed with saliva
Salvia made in salivary glands and contains enzyme. Amylase
Oesophagus
Food is swallowed and moved down to stomach by ave like muscular contractions called peristalsis
Stomach
Food is churned and mixed with gastric juices to create smaller food particles and b real done large proteins
Liver
Makes bile which breaks down fat in food
gall bladder
Releases bile
Pancreas
Produces digestive juices and the main enzymes
Small intestine
Nutrients from digested food are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Bile and pancreatic juices mixed with food and break down carbs fats and proteins so body can absorb them
