Circulatory System Flashcards
Blood Vessels
Veins - bring blood to heart
Arteries- bring blood away from heart
Capillaries - let gases pass through them
Blood
4 components Plasma Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets
Plasma
Liquid part of blood
Pale yellow
Mostly water
Transports materials and heat around the body
Red blood cells
Made in bone marrow (centre of bones) Contains haemoglobin- red coloured pigment Need iron to make haemoglobin Carries oxygen 45% of blood composition No nucleus Small and rubbery.
White blood cells
Made in bone marrow
Fights infection
Surrounds microorganisms and destroys them
Forms proteins called antibodies to destroy microorganisms
7% of blood composition
Has nucleus
Are large
Platelets
Formed in bone marrow when large cells break down to smaller irregular fragments of cells Help form blood clots Prevent blood loss Prevent microorganisms entering body Less than 1% of blood composition
Arteries
Carry blood away from heart
Strong blood flow-high pressure
Thick walls
Veins
Carry blood to heart
Blood floe -low pressure
Thinner walls
Valve - to prevent back flow
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessels
Found between arteries and veins
Huge no in body
Gases exchanged
Heart
Size of clenched fist
Between middle and left side of chest
Cardiac muscle-strong, doesn’t tire easily
Contracts to pump blood around body via blood vessels
Force of blood causes pulse.
