Ch4 celestial bodies Flashcards
Celestial bodies
Celestial bodies are any natural objects found outside of earths atmosphere. Eg moon, planets, stars
Stars
A star is a luminous sphere of mainly hydrogen and helium gas held together by the force of gravity.
Lifecycle of a star
Massive star
Stellar nebula Massive star Red Supergiant Supernova Back hole/neutron star
Lifecycle of a star
Low mass stars
Stellar nebula Low mass star Red giant Planetary nebula White dwarf
Planetary system
All celestial bodies that orbit a star because of the stars gravity.
Solar system
Solar system consists of a star and all the celestial bodies that orbits the star
Planet
A planet is a celestial body that a) orbits a star b)has a large enough mass to be spherical and c)Has cleared the region around its orbit of other celestial bodies.
Asteroid
Large lumps of rock or metal smaller than planets that orbit the sun.
Meteoroid
Smaller lumps of rocks that orbit the sun.
Meteor
Meteor/shooting star is when a meteoroid enters earths atmosphere
Meteorite
Remainder of meteoroid that lands on earth.
Comets
Large lumps of ice, gases and dust that orbit the sun.
Moon
Natural satellite that orbits a planet
luminous
Object that creates or emits light
Non-luminous
Do not create or emit light
