digestive system Flashcards
Liver
Anatomical Appearance:
Big Brown Organ at anterior of cavity.
Function:
The liver is the large, dark organ that dominates the anterior abdomen. It is divided into five lobes, and is the primary site of conversion of glucose into glycogen (a carbohydrate storage molecule) and the reverse process, the breakdown of glycogen into glucose. It is also the site of the synthesis of bile, a product that aids in the digestion of fats by emulsification
Gall Bladder
Anatomical Appearance:
A yellow-green colored sac located beneath the right central liver lobe.
Function:
Short term storage for bile before small intestine asks for it.
Stomach
Anatomical Appearance:
A muscular, hollow organ.
Function:
holds and breaks down food
Esophagus
Anatomical Appearance:
An easily compressed tube that lies immediately dorsal to the trachea. traverses the thoracic cavity, and then passes through an opening in the diaphragm to enter the abdominal cavity.
Function:
The tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
Small Intestine
Anatomical Appearance:
Under the liver. really swiggley and big.
Function:
Digestion of food and absorption of nutrients.
Duodenum
Anatomical Appearance:
The most exterior J shaped part of the small intestine.
Function:
Receives bile from the gall bladder via a series of ducts, and receives digestive and receives digestive enzymes from the pancreas.
Pancreas
Anatomical Appearance:
Is a lobulated structure (it looks a bit like baby corn) and is somewhat lighter in color than the neighboring intestines. the body of the Pancreas lies in the loop of the duodenum.
Function:
Produces enzymes used to chemically digest food. (insulin or ?X?)
Spleen
Anatomical Appearance:
Left external margin *
Function:
Immune system organ that fights infection and breaks down expired red blood cells.
Mesentery
Anatomical Appearance:
This transparent sheets of tissue connecting the small intestine.
Function:
Holds small intestine together and their blood vessels
Large Intestine (Colon)
Anatomical Appearance:
Found at the end of the small intestine where it is noticeably larger than the small intestine.
Function:
Absorption of water and vitamins + preparation of undigested materials as feces.
Caecum
Anatomical Appearance:
A short blind sac Found at the juncture of the small and large intestine.
Function:
absorbs fluids and salts
