Digestive System Flashcards
What are the major components of the digestive system?
1) Mouth- where mechanical and chemical digestion begin and chemical digestion begins with the addition of a watery substance called saliva
2) Esophagus- moves food from the mouth to the stomach
3) Stomach- where mechanical and chemical digestion takes place and food is mixed with enzymes and strong digestive solution, such as hydrochloric acid
4) Small Intestine- site of digestion and absorption of nutrients from food
1) villi- structures which increase the surface area of the small intestine for absorbing nutrients
5) Large Intestine- site of water absorption and elimination of unused food particles
What are the functions of the digestive system?
1) process of breaking down food into small molecules so they can be absorbed and moved into the blood
2) 4 Steps of processing food:
1) Ingestion
2) Digestion
3) Absorption
4) Elimination
3) 2 Types of Digestion
1) Mechanical- takes place when food is chewed, mixed and churned
2) Chemical- takes place when chemical reactions occur that break down large food molecules into smaller ones
How do other body system relate to the digestive system?
1) Circulatory System: bones make blood for the circulatory system
