Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the major components of the circulatory system?
1) Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to cells and carries carbon dioxide and waste away from the cells
2) Blood Vessels
1) Arteries- vessels that carry blood away from the heart
2) Capillaries- vessels that connect veins and arteries and where nutrients and oxygen diffuse into cells throughout thin walls
3) Veins- vessels that carry blood to the heart
3) Heart pumps blood and is made of cardiac muscle tissue.
What are the functions of the circulatory system?
1) transport materials (oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and wastes) throughout the body
How does blood flow through the body?
Heart without oxygen➡️ lungs ➡️ heart with oxygen ➡️ arteries ➡️ capillaries ➡️ veins ➡️ heart without oxygen
How do other body systems relate to the circulatory system?
1) Digestive System: breaks down food and nutrients and the blood transports it to the cells
2) Respiratory System: the blood carries oxygen to the lungs so you can breathe
