Digestive System Flashcards
What is digestion?
The breaking down of food so nutrients can be absorbed into the blood and carried to your cells
What are the 13 parts of the digestive system
Mouth
Salivary Glands
Epiglottis
Esophagus
Stomach
Duodenum
Pancreas
Liver
Gall Bladder
Small Intestine
Large Intestine
Rectum
Anus
Describe the function of the mouth
Where food enters the body
food is broken down by chewing and salivary enzymes
Describe the function of the Salivary Glands
Produces around 1.5L of saliva per day
Saliva contains enzymes that begin breaking down starch
Describe the function of the epiglottis
A flap in the throat that stops food and water from entering the trachea and lungs
Describe the function of the Esophagus
Long tube between the mouth and stomach
Uses rhythmic, involuntary muscle contractions (peristalsis)
Forces food from the throat to the stomach
Describe the function of the Stomach
Food is churned in an acid bath
When full, can hold between 2-4L of food and water
Describe the function of the Duodenum
First part of the small intestine
Where digested food enters the small intestine
Describe the function of the Pancreas
Produces enzymes and pancreatic juices
Digests carbohydrates, fats and protein
Juice neutralises the stomach acid
Describe the function of the Liver
Filters toxins from the blood
Makes bile and some blood proteins
Stores vitamin A, D and Iron
Largest internal organ
Describe the function of the Gall Bladder
Bile is stored and released from here into the small intestine
Describe the function of the Small Intestine
Most digestion and absorption of food occurs here (Food is in molecular form)
Food goes through after leaving the stomach
Describe the function of the Large Intestine
Absorbs remaining water, salts, vitamins and sugars (makes it a bit more solid)
Undigested food goes here from the small intestine
Describe the function of the Rectum
Stores poop
Lower part of the large intestine
Describe the function of the Anus
Where poop exits the body
