What are the 3 key words related to digestion and what do they mean?
Ingestion: Taking in of substances
Digestion: Breaking down of substances
Egestion: removal of undigested/ unabsorbed food from the body.
Order in which food passes through the alimentary canal
Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Duodenum, Ileum, Colon, Rectum, Anus
What is the oesaphagus?
The tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.
What is the function of the pancreas?
This organ produces amylase, lipase and trypsin (protease) enzymes and releases them into the duodenum.
What is the duodenum?
This is where the food comes in contact with the bile.
What is the aus?
Faeces leaves the body here.
What is the stomach?
This organ contains the enzymes pepsin ( a protease) and also hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria.
What do the salivary glands do?
Produce saliva. Saliva contains the enzyme salivary amylase.
What is the function of the small intestine?
This is where absorption of the food molecules into the bloodstream takes place.
What does the appendix do?
No use in humans except to cause pain if it bursts.
What is the function of the large intestine?
Water from the food is absorbed here.
