Digestive System Flashcards
A continuous tube running from the mouth to anus. This is composed of mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine
Gastrointestinal/Alimentary tract
These are row of small teeth along the margin of the upper jaw
Maxillary teeth
This is a pair of grooves on the inner side of the maxillary teeth that receives the lower jaw when the mouth is closed
Sulcus marginalis
A prominent depression of the sulcus marginalis at the anterior tip of the upper jaw
Median subrostral fossa
A pair of depressions of the sulcus marginalis lateral to the pulvinars
Lateral subrostral fossa
A pair of low elevations on each side of the median subrostral fossa
Pulvinar rostrale
A pair of slit-like openings above the eyeballs leading to the external nares
Internal/posterior nares/Choanae
These are two large rounded bulges of the eyeball
Eyeball/orbital prominence
These are fine teeth projecting from the vomers in between the internal nares
Vomerine teeth
A pair of slit-like openings found medial to the angles of the jaw
Opening of eustachian tube
Leads to the cavity of the middle ear
Eustachian tube
These are two shallow depressions on each side of tuberculum prelinguale
Prelingual fossa
A prominent median elevation at the tip of the lower jaw. This fits into the median subrostral fossa when the mouth is closed
Tuberculum prelinguale
A forked muscular organ attached to the anterior tip of the lower jaw
Tongue
This is a pair of slit-like opening on the floor of the mouth close to the angle of the jaw
Opening of vocal sac
A large transverse slit, posterior to the laryngeal prominence
Opening of esophagus
Circular elevation anterior to the esophageal opening
Laryngeal prominence
A short vertical slit like opening at the center of the laryngeal prominence
Glottis
Posterior portion of the buccal cavity which opens into the esophagus
Pharynx
A very short tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach
Esophagus
A large whitish organ with either u or j shaped enlarged portion of the digestive tube
Stomach
This is a constriction at the posterior end of the stomach
Pylorus
This is a dark red organ located on the left lateral side of the stomach
Spleen
This is a small greenish sac located at the ventral part of the median lobe of liver
Gallbladder
This is slender and the longest portion of the tube which is irregularly coiled
Small intestine
The more anterior portion of the small intestine which is wider but shorter
Duodenum
More posterior, narrower and longer coiled division of the small intestine
Ileum
This is a short dilated tube at the terminal end of the ileum
Large intestine
This is the posterior dilated end of the large intestine located within the pelvic girdle
Cloaca
A small opening at the posterior end of the cloaca
Cloacal opening/Vent
This is a large reddish brown organ on the anterior portion of the pleuro-peritoneal cavity
Liver
Stores bile
Gallbladder
Come from the left and right lobes of the liver
Hepatic ducts
A tiny duct connected to the neck of the gallbladder
Cystic duct
The large duct formed by the cystic, hepatic and pancreatic duct. This is surrounded by the tissues of the pancreas and enters the duodenum
Common bile duct
This is a small elongated and irregularly shaped gland located between the stomach and duodenum
Pancreas
Conducts the pancreatic juice to the duodenum
Pancreatic duct
Mesentery of the stomach
Mesogaster
Mesentery of the spleen
Gastrosplenic ligament
Mesentery of the liver
Falciform ligament; gastrohepatic ligament; hepatoduodenal ligament
Mesentery of the small intestine
Mesenterium or mesentery proper
Mesentery of the large intestine
Mesorectum
