Digestive System Flashcards
What is the alimentary canal?
Continuous one way tube that that begins with the mouth and ends with the anus
Mechanical digestion
Physically broken into smaller pieces Ex: Cut, ground, torn
Chemical digestion
Large organic molecules are broken down into simple molecules, uses enzymes
What does the mouth do?
Where the food enters the body, teeth tear food into smaller pieces, enzymes in saliva break down food further, carbohydrate digestion
What is the esophagus and what does it do?
Tune that goes from mouth to stomach, food moves deon through the process of peristalsis (contraction of smooth muscles
What does the stomach do?
Churns and mashes food, protein digestion begins (enzyme Pepsin)
What is hydrochlric acid?
Acid in stomach that destroys bacteria and provides proper pH for enzymes action
What does the small intestine do?
Most digestion occurs: Carbs(amylase) Protein(trypsin) and lipids(lipase)
What are villi?
Tiny finger like projections of the intestinal wall
What does the colon do?
Absorbs water
What are the salivary glands? What do they do?
Located in mouth, secrete saliva, begins digestion of starch
What does the liver do?
Secretes bile, breaks down fats and oil (emulsification)
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores bile
What does the pancreas do?
Produces enzymes
Ulcer
Small hole in alimentary canal, too much acid burns mucus lining.
