What is Viral Hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver caused by different viral infections
Which type of viral hepatitis is transmitted orally?
Hepatitis A
Which types of viral hepatitis is transmitted through serum?
Hepatitis B and C
What are the three clinical phases of viral hepatitis?
Prodromal, Icteric, and Recovery
What is the Prodromal Phase?
Early symptoms (fatigue, nausea, low fever)
What is the Icteric Phase?
Jaundice, dark urine and liver tenderness
What is the Recovery Phase?
Symptoms subside, liver function normalizes
Primary Liver Cancers are?
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma
Secondary Liver Cancer is?
It originates from other cancers (GI, breast, lung, skin)
What are the risk factors for Liver Cancer?
Chronic Hep B, C, or D. Aflatoxin exposure (a toxin produced by fungi in contaminated food)
What is Cholelithiasis (Gallstones)?
hardened deposits of bile components (cholesterol, bile salts, bilirubin)
What is Cholecystitis?
Inflammation of the gallbladder, often due to gallstones blocking bile flow
Risk factors for gallstones?
Female, obesity, high-fat diet, rapid weight loss
Symptoms of Cholecystitis?
Severe right upper quadrant pain, nausea, vomiting, fever.
Gallbladder Cancer
Rare but aggressive, often asymptomatic until advanced stages.
Acute Pancreatitis?
Sudden inflammation due to gallstones or alcohol
Chronic Pancreatitis?
Long term damage often due to alcohol abuse.
What are symptoms of Pancreatitis?
Severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, elevated amylase, lipase levels
Risk factors of Pancreatic Cancer?
Smoking, chronic pancreatitis, family history
Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer?
Jaundice, weight loss and abdominal pain
Viral Hepatitis can cause?
chronic liver damage which increases the risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer
