Digestion Basics Flashcards
Role of digestive system
Digestive system breaks the food down we eat into smaller molecules (monomers) that are readily useable at the cellular level.
Order of GI tract
Mouth pharynx esophagus stomach small intestine large intestine rectum and anus
GI includes anything that food particles actively pass through
Mnemonic idea
Mushy= mouth
Poor= pharynx
Einstein= esophageal
Skipped= stomach
Sadly= small
If= Intestine
Lame= large
Iguanas= intestine
Returned= rectum
Arrongantly=anus
Role of salivary glands
Food is mixed with saliva from salivary glands saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase that chemical digests starch turning some of it to maltose. Saliva also lubricates the food so it passes easier through the esophagus. Also helps create the bolus
Pancreas role
Releases many enzymes to breakdown and digest the 4 macromolecules and also has a role in neutralizing HCL (hydrocloric acid).
Gall bladdee role
Stores bile mechanically breaks down fat particles for easier digestion
Liver role
Liver makes bile synthesizes HDL cholesterol amino acid and vitamins breakdown and covert nutrient store glycogen and fat and detoxify drugs alcohol and other poisons
Ingestion process
The process of obtaining and eating and drinking food this included meds and poisons
Digestion process
Includes two types of digestion to help turn the food into usable form has monomers
Absorption process
The process of absorbing the monomers and passing them on to the bloodstream for distribution( circulatory takes these nutrients from the digestive system and deliver to cells of body)
Elimination
Material that cannot be absorbed or digested must be eliminated from the body aka elimination and egestion
Mechanical digestion
Grinding and mashing of the food to allow Surface area for chemical digestion
Chemical digestion
Breaking down macromolecules by enzymes and hydrolysis into their monomers and subunits so they can be absorbed into the blood
Difference between egestion and excretion
Egestion is solid waste unable to be digested (so poop)
Excretion is metabolic waste usually salts, water, urea (so pee)
