Digestion And Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst
A catalyst is a substance which ch increases the speed of a reaction without being changed it used up in the reaction
What are enzymes made up of
Large proteins and proteins are made up of chains of amino acids
How does an enzyme work
It’s suited for one specific reaction as the substrate has to fit into its active site and if it doesn’t the reaction won’t be catalysed
What is the induced fit model
When the active site changed shape slightly so the substrate binds to it to get a tighter fit
What happens if a enzyme is denatured
The bonds in the enzyme break which changes the shape of the active site so the substrate won’t fit anymore
What two factors cause denatured enzyme reactions
pH level and temperature
How does amylase work?
Starch to amylase to maltose
Where is amylase made
1) salivary glands
2) pancreas
3) small intestine
How does protease work
Proteins to protease to amino acids
Where is proteases made
1) stomach (pepsin)
2) pancreas
3) small intenstine
How does lipases work
1) lipid to lipase to glycerol and fatty acids
Where are lipids made
1) pancreas
2) small intenstine
