Cell Differentation Flashcards
What is differentiation
When a cell changes to become specialised for a job
When does differentiation occur
Mostly when an organism grows
How are sperm cells specialised
1) long tail and streamlined head to help swim
2) lots of mitochondria for movement
3) carries enzymes in head to digest egg
How are nerve cells specialised
1) long cells to cover more distance
2) branched connections to form a network
How are muscle cells specialised
1) long so they have space to contract
2) lots of mitochondria to generate nervy for contraction
How are phloem and xylem specialised
1) joined end to end and long to form a tube for transporting substances
2) xylem is hollow and has few subcellular structures so stuff can flow through
