digestion and anatomy Flashcards
structures of the GI tract
mouth
oropharynx
esophagus
organs of abdominal cavity
what is the process of digestion
food goes into mouth
then pharynx
then esophagus
then stomach where it mixes with gastric juices
empties into duodenum via peristalsis
where does digestion mainly occur
stomach and duodenum via peristalsis
where does peristalsis take place
begins around middle stomach.
also occurs in jejunum and ileum but NOT as forceful unless an obstruction is present
How is the pancreas involved in digestion
it has both endo- and exocrine secretions.
these secretions are important because they play a role in digestion and absorption of glucose by cells
how is the liver involved in digestion
bile secreted from the liver and aids in fat digestion and absorption in the intestines
where do the ducts of the liver and pancreas open up to?
the duodenum
what are solid organs and name them
organs that maintain their shape.
liver spleen adrenal glands kidneys ovaries
what are hollow organs and name them
shape depends on contents.
uterus stomach gallbladder small intestines bladder
what is the order of the parts of the intestines
ascending colon-terminal ileum, cecum, and appendix.
transverse Colon
descending Colon
rectum
anal canal
where does most of the water absorption occur
ascending colon
where is stool formed
solid stool formed in descending and sigmoid colon.
resides in rectum before evacuation
