Digestion And Absorption DLA Part 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Summarize carb digestion

A

Carbohydrates (CHO) are digested mainly to glucose, fructose and galactose.
CHO
1. Mouth: salivary a-amylase degrades starch and glycogen to dextrins, isomaltose and maltose.
Humans cannot digest cellulose (lost in feces).

  1. Stomach: carbohydrate digestion stops.
  2. Small intestine: pancreatic a-amylase forms isomaltose and maltose.
  3. Brush border cells: disaccharidases cleave lactose, sucrose, isomaltose and maltose.

Q

Where are dissacharides cleaved?

A

At the brush border

Sucrase-isomaltase and maltase-glucoamylase are usually present at higher levels than lactase
