Digestion And Absobtion Flashcards
What is an alimentary canal, where does it start and where does it end? (3)
Starts with mouth, ends with anus, and includes all tubes in between.
What is nutrition? (1)
Food entering the alimentary canal
What is digestion? (1)
Food broken up into smaller pieces
What is absorption? (2)
Small pieces of food going into bloodstream to be taken to cells
What is egestion? (2)
Food that wasn’t absorbed and passes out the end of the digestive system.
What three molecules are too big and cannot be absorbed? (3)
Protein starch and fat.
By what process does protein starch infect get broken down into smaller pieces through the alimentary canal?
Digestion
Name the building block of each of these big molecules. They will be broken down to inside the alimentary canal. (6)
Protein - amino acids
Starch - glucose
Fat - glycerol, fatty acids
State function of mouth (3)
Chew food
Saliva breakage into sugar
Tongue helps to swallow
Define Salivary glands (1)
Produce and release saliva
Define Esophagus (3)
Tube carry food from mouth to stomach with peristalsis.
Define liver (3)
Makes bile
Breakdown, toxic substances
Helps with fat digestion
Define stomach (3)
- Hydraulic acid kills bacteria
- Stomach juices breakdown, protein to amino acids
- Churning movements makes food with juices
Define gall bladder (1)
Store bile
Define pancreas (2)
- Juice that they just protein starch and fats
- Helps control blood sugar levels (hormones, glucagon, insulin)
