Digestion Flashcards
what is the lock and key theory?
the substrate that fits into the enzymes active site
what do enzymes do?
they speed up chemical reactions
how do enzymes work in digestion?
enzymes pass out of the cells , the come into contact with food molecules, they need catalyse the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble molecules.
what are the digestive enzymes?
protease, lipase and carbohydrase.
where is amylase produced?
salivary glands and the pancreas
what is amylase?
it is a carbohydrase
what does amylase do?
breaks down startch into sugar
where is protease produced?
stomach, pancreas and small intestine
what does protease do?
breaks down proteins into animo acids
where is lipase produced?
pancreas and small intestine
what does lipase do?
breaks down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
where is bile produced and stored?
in the liver and is stored in the gall bladder.
what is bile?
it is an alkaline used to neutralise hydrochloric acid from the stomach
what is the required practical that involves amylase?
testing the effect of pH on the rate of reaction of amylase
