Digestion Flashcards
What is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach?
The gullet or oesophagus.
What does the stomach do?
It churns up and mixes it with gastric juices which contain acid and enzymes to break down food.
What does the small intestine do?
It produces all 3 types of enzymes to break down food and it is where dissolved food enters the bloodstream.
What does the large intestine do?
It receives unused food and removes excess water and salts. The remaining food is turned into faeces (poop).
What is the liver used for?
- neutralises stomach acid to help the enzymes in the small intestine.
- produces bile which helps enzymes break down fat.
What are the 3 enzymes, what do they break down, and what are the broken down products?
Protein - broken down by protease - -> amino acids
Fats - broken down by lipase- -> fatty acids and glycerol
Carbohydrates - broken down by carbohydrase/amylase - -> glucose
Where does digestion start?
The mouth
