What are the main components of blood?
A
Plasma (55%), Red blood cells (41%), White blood cells and Platelets (4%)

What is plasma and what is it used for?
A
Pale yellow liquid. Used to carry: . carbon dioxide from cells to lungs . dissolved food to cells . hormones to different parts of the body . waste from liver to kidneys

What are red blood cells and what are they used for?
A
Cells with no nucleus. They carry oxygen from lungs to cells.

What are white blood cells used for?
A
Fight pathogens that enter the bloodstream.

What are platelets used for?
A
They help blood clot if the skin is cut.

How does blood clot?
A
- Skin is cut
- Platelets turn fibrinogen (a protein in blood) into fibrin in contact with air. They form a net over the cut.
- Red blood cells get trapped in the net which makes a clot and seals the cut.
- The clot dries into a scab where new skin grown underneath.
