Digestion Flashcards
Function of mouth
Chew food (mechanical digestion)
Function of pharynx
Receives food from mouth and transports to oesophagus
Function of oesophagus
Tube joins stomach and mouth, muscle contractions (peristalsis) help move food along
Function of Salivary glands
Create saliva to help with chewing and swallowing
Function of stomach
Stomach acid and enzymes breakdown food / bile
Function of liver
provides bile to gallbladder
Function of gallbladder
store bile - transport to stomach and duodenum
Function of Pancreas
makes pancreatic enzymes that break down sugars, fats, and starches
Function of small intestine
has vili to further digest and absorb nutrients
Duodenum - pancreatic enzymes
Jejunum - villi
ILEUM - villi
Function of large intestine
absorbs water and salts from bolus / creates stool
Function of rectum/anus
rectum = lets body know u need to go anus = where stool exits body
Explain difference between mechanical and chemical digestion
Mechanical digestion involves physical movement to make foods smaller. Chemical digestion uses enzymes to break down food.
What organ does the majority of chemical digestion occur?
Small intestine:
- vili
- long
Main function of vili
increasing the surface area for food absorption and adding digestive secretions.
ENZYMES
Protease - convert protein to amino acids (trypsin (si) pepsin)
Amylase - Breaks down starch (carbs) (saliva)
Lipase - converts fats to fatty acids or glycerol
Most happens in stomach
