What happens in an isotonic cell? animal and plant?
water and solute concentrations are equal, looking cell for both
What happens in a hypotonic cell? animal? plant?
water goes into the cell ( high outside to low inside)
animal: cells swell and burst
plant: normal turgid cell
What happens in a hypertonic solution?
water moves out of the cell ( low outside high inside)
animal: shriveled cells
plant: cytoplasm shrinks from the cell wall
Why is the hypotonic solution in the Red Blood Cell experiment transparent?
When RBCs are placed in distilled water, a hypotonic solution, water moves from the outside of the
cell to the inside, causing the cell to swell and rupture. Once the RBC ruptures, it loses its
hemoglobin and becomes transparent and nearly invisible
What is diffusion?
a passive process (no energy required) resulting from the random motion of molecules by which there is a net flow of matter from a region of high concentration to a region of low
concentration
What is osmosis?
a passive process (no energy required) where the movement of a solvent (such as water) through a semipermeable membrane (as of a living cell) into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equalize the concentrations of solute on the two sides of the membrane
What is homeostasis?
a self-regulating process by which a living organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions
What substances were able to diffuse and which were not in the dialysis bag experiment ( it is related to their size)?
-Iodine and Glucose could diffuse
- Starch could not diffuse
