Diffusion Flashcards
Definition
The net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to a low concentration, down a concentration gradient, until equilibrium is met
Factors that affect diffusion
Concentration gradient
Surface area
Temperature
What type of process is diffusion?
Passive process - no energy is needed for it to happen
How does the concentration gradient affect diffusion?
The higher it is, the faster the rate. However as it moves towards equilibrium the gradient gets smaller and therefore over time the rate slows down
How does the thickness of the exchange surface affect diffusion?
The thinners it is (I.e the shorter the distance the particles have to travel) the faster the rate
How does surface area affect the rate of diffusion?
The larger the SA, the faster the rate
How does temperature affect diffusion?
The higher it is, the faster the rate as the particles have more kinetic energy to move/diffuse
