Co-transport Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
The coupled movement of one molecule with its concentration and another molecule against its concentration gradient
2
Q
What do co-transporters do?
A
They bind 2 molecules at a time. The concentration of 1 of the molecules is used to move the other molecule against its own concentration gradient
3
Q
Step of co-transport (using sodium and glucose)
A
Sodium is actively transported out of the lumen using the sodium-potassium pump. Which changes the concentration gradient
Sodium diffuses, down its concentration gradient, via the co-transporter protein
Therefore the co-transporter also carries glucose
Glucose passes into the blood, by facilitated diffusion and a carrier protein
