Differential gene expression Flashcards
What happens when lactose is NOT present?
• the regulatory gene expression produces the lac repression, which is a transcription favtor that binds to the operator site when there is not lactose present.
Define Operon.
Genes with related functions grouped together.
What is ‘Z and Y’?
genes coding for proteins involved in the metabolism of lactose - stuctural genes
What is the Repressor Protein?
Made by the regulatory gene, can bind to O to switch gene off.
What is ‘O - operator’ ?
DNA binding site of a repressor protein - can block promoter.
What is ‘P - promoter’ ?
RNA polymerase bunding site - starting point for transcription if genes
Describe structural genes.
genes that code for useful proteins
