Anderson shelter ? What was it and give info about it
Anderson shelter: built in back garden, corrugated iron sheets over a pit dug in the ground, earth piled over the top to protect against shrapnel, would not survive a direct hit

Morrison shelters ?
Large steel table, sides covered with wire netting that could be lifted up a could fit up to 3 people. Effective as it stopped people being crushed by collapsing buildings
Gas masks
-Although banned many thought it would be used
- 1938 the government issued gas masks to adults and in 1938-1939 smaller ones for children
- posters and leaflets encouraged people to carry one with them
-by 1940 few people carried their gas masks around
Blackout
- In July 1939 the government sent out a leaflet saying they had to do a blackout to make it harder for the Germans
- ARP wardens were appointed to man observation posts and sound air raid alarms
- Main task was to patrol and sure the blackout was effective, during the phony war they where mocked
Evacuation: who, areas, amount and the evacuation itself
The government planned an orderly evacuation
1. Three types of areas: danger areas, neutral areas and reception areas(safest)
2. The idea was to give free transport to 1.4 million poor and to ask people to billet them in reception areas
3. 2 days before war broke out a total of 1.3 million people mainly children were evacuated on special trains and 600,000 red busses
4. Mixed attitudes towards it
By March 1940 only 300,000 evacuees where still in the reception areas
