Different methods of injury prevention Flashcards
L2
Explain the procedure of screening
- Performed early in pre season
- Identify the current musculoskeletal condition of the athlete by performing a series of tests
How does screening help prevent injury to an athlete?
- Identifies any past/current injuries
- Identifies muscle imbalances and assesses joint mobility
- Identifies performers at risk of complication from exercise
- Can identify a suitable injury rehab programme
State the reason for protective equipment and give an example for the 4 types with the corresponding sport
- To prevent impact injuries
Head - helmet (cricket)
Upper body - chest guard (baseball)
Lower body - shin pads (football)
Feet - boots with correct protection and studs (football/cricket
Explain the reason for each of the 4 stages in a warm up
Pulse raiser - Increased heart rate and oxygen delivery to muscles
Stretching - Increased flexibility
Skill related practice
Mental rehearsal - Can increase alertness
Explain the 4 types of stretching
Active - stretched position held by performers own agonist
Passive - stretched position held by another body part/position held by partner
Static/PNF - stretched position held and isometric contraction applied
Ballistic - bounce in and out of stretch
How do you perform a stretch safely?
- Warm up prior to stretching
- Make stretch sport specific
- Hold stretch for 30 seconds
- Never hold a painful stretch
- Balance/equalise stretches
What is the benefit of taping/bracing?
- Limits movement in joints to prevent muscular strains/sprains
