Bland Diet
AKA: Low Fiber Diet, Low Residue Diet
Excludes foods that are irritating to the GI tract (fiber – whole grains, cruciferous veggies)
Used in: GI (peptic ulcer, GERD, diverticulitis)
CI: severe acute IBS, acute IBD
Elemental Diet
Liquid nutrition formula, contains amino acids, short-chain polysaccharides, TG’s
Used in: maintaining nutritional status, possibly other GI conditions with malnutrition like Crohn’s, SIBO
CI: N/A
Fasting
Eating nothing, drinking only water
Used in: detox, obesity, diabetes
CI: underweight, eating disorder, pregnancy
Gluten Free Diet
Eliminating gluten from all food intake (wheat, barley, rye)
Used in: Celiac disease

High Carb Diet
Eating lots of carbs….
Used in: Malnourishment
CI: Dental issues, cavities
High Fat Diet
AKA Ketogenic Diet
High-fat, low protein and carb
Used in: Epilepsy
CI: Individualized to case
High Fiber Diet
AKA Low Fat Diet, Pritikin, Ornish Diet
Eat whole foods, vegetarian, less carbs and higher-quality complex carbs
Used in: Everything (constipation, cancer, PMS, IBS, obesity, etc…)

High Protein Diet
AKA Atkins, Zone Diet
High animal product intake, less of the rest
Used in: Diabetes, anorexia, obesity
CI: Kidney disease, OA, heart disease, gout
Low Protein Diet
Low protein
Used in: renal failure, gout, osteoporosis
CI: Decreased renal failure d/t diabetes (should eat higher protein to help control the diabetes, the cause of the renal failure)
Rotation Diet
Tolerated foods at regular intervals (3-4 days), to avoid new sensitivities
Used in: food allergies, after elimination diet

Oligoantigenic Diet
More reactive foods eliminated (similar to elimination diet)
Used in: food sensitivity, asthma, ADHD

Elimination Diet
AKA Hypoallergenic, Food Intolerance Diet
Couple weeks of hypoallergenic foods only
Gradual re-introduction and testing
Used in: Food allergies

Challenge Diet
Phase of the elimination diet when reintroducing offending foods after abstaining, usually most allergenic first
Used in: food allergies
CI: severe deadly allergy, infection (false positives d/t other symptoms occurring)
Paleo Diet
Diet based on types of food presumed to have been eating by early humans, mostly meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, EXCLUDES dairy, grain, processed foods
Used in: Stabilizing blood sugar, reducing allergies, cardiovascular health, autoimmunity, improving sleep, anti- inflammatory, and everything else

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension
Low sodium, grains, vegetables, fruit, dairy, lean meat poultry fish, nuts, seeds, legumes, fats and oils
Used in: Hypertension
