Dietary Assessment and Dietary reference values Flashcards
What are DRV needed for?
- ensures adequate intakes of energy and nutrients throughout life
- assist in preventing malnutrition
- nutrition labelling
- nutritional recommendations
What is RNI?
Reference nutrient intake
- amount of nutrient that is enough to enure that needs of nearly all the group 97.5% are being met
What is the estimate average requirement (EARs)?
estimate of average requirement for energy, for nutrient
- approx. 50% of the population will need less and 50% will need more energy
What is the lower reference nutrient intake (LRNI)?
amount of nutrient that is enough for only small number of people who have low requirements (2.5%)
- majority of population need more
What is the safe intake used for?
when there’s insufficient evidence to set an EAR, RNI or LRNI
what is the safe intake defined as?
amount judged to be enough for almost everyone, but below a level that could have undesirable effects
In order to formulate DRVs, what is the 3 stage process?
- Review the science
- Develop dietary guidelines
- Implement dietary guidelines
What are influential factors of DRVs?
- gender
- growth
- pregnancy and lactation
Low blood folate levels are a risk of?
anaemia
Why are dietary assessment methods needed/used for?
- estimate food consumption or nutrient intake in individuals/groups
- needed to understand effects of diet on health/risk/disease
- determining non-nutrient intake (additives, pesticides)
- limitations and sources of error appreciated
What is DAPA?
Stands for Diet, anthropometry and physical activity, a measurement toolkit online.
