Diet components Flashcards
protein -> broken down into and functions =
protease breaks this down into amino acids
-for growth + repair of cells + tissues, can be a fuel for respiration and anitbodies, enzymes and some hormones are made out of protein
carbohydrates -> broken down into and functions =
amylase or other carbohydrates break this down into simple sugars- e.g glucose
-fuel for respiration, the process which energy is released, can be stored as glycogen
lipids -> broken down into and functions =
lipase breaks this down into fatty acids and glycerol
-store for energy and fuel for respiration, used for cell membranes and insulation
water -> broken down into and functions =
does not need to be broken down
absorbed in the large intestine
-used in blood plasma for transporting substances, essential for regulating temperature
vitamins -> broken down into and functions =
does not need to be broken down
-A= needed for pigment in eyes and protects the surface
-C= for healthy skin teeth and gums
D= to absorb calcium
minerals -> broken down into and functions =
does not need to be broken down
-iron forms the part of haemoglobin which binds to oxygen
-calcium is needed to form healthy bones and teeth
fibre (e.g. cellulose) -> broken down into and functions =
cannot be broken down by enzymes or be digested
-assists the movement of food through the intestine and helps prevent bowl cancer
