What is a metabolic rate?
The speed at which chemical reactions occur in the body
Will a person with more muscle have a higher metabolic rate or a person with more fatty tissue? Why?
Muscle needs more energy which means a person with a higher proportion of muscle to fat in their bodies will have a higher metabolic rate. However, physically bigger people are likely to have a higher metabolic rate than smaller people - the bigger you are, the more energy your body needs to be supplied with (because you have more cells).
Who tends to have a higher metabolic rate, men or women?
Men because they’re slightly bigger and usually have a larger proportion of muscle.
