- Fuel manual control handle in off position
- Manually trip overspeed butterfly valve
When the DG is in standby or shutdown; what position are the fuel racks in?
Minimum position
What pump is normally running to maintain it in a standby condition?
The electric circ pump and heater (maintain oil 120-135 degrees F)
What happens during the five minute cooldown?
Tests emergency run solenoids and pneumatic trip circuits
When a DG automatically starts; how long before the load sequencer automatically starts the DG blg HVAC?
25 seconds
How long does the DG have to reach rated speed and voltage?
10 seconds
How long after a class 4160 bus is energized will the load sequencer begin sequencing on loads if the sequencer has power?
60 seconds
Where do you check the excitation relays are reset?
They are inside the DG control panel cabinet.
Approximately how long after the diesel generator shuts down does the field flash relay reset. (meaning the light coming on).
9 minutes
When you are going to press the first out/ system reset button on the DG control panel, what do you need to be aware of?
- Make sure there are no active faults. If there is contact the control room before moving forward.
- If the DG in in Emergency mode DO NOT push the reset button as the DG will automatically start.
If the DG is in cooldown and it receives a start signal in test; what happens?
DG will trip on incomplete sequence
When we are running a DG loaded; what is the minimum time it is recommended we run it?
four hours
What is preferred power factor when running the DG?
1.0 lagging power factor
To stop the DG locally, what position must the mode control switch be in? Stop from the CR position?
Locally it must be in local
CR must be in remote
Describe the DG emergency stop sequence
Run relays deenergize and run light off Shutdown solenoid deenergizes Generator breaker trip signal Engine stops with no cooldown Warm-up pumps on
If the DG is running and we lose class control power what happens?
DG trip. We lose the tripping capability of the output breakers. Must manually trip the output breaker to prevent motorizing the DG.
If we lose non-class control power. What are the effects on a non-running DG?
Alarms and the CR couldn’t start the DG. The DG will still start in an emergency or via the emergency local push buttons
When will the DG control equipment room normal AHU auto start?
Anytime its respective room temperature is greater than 105 degrees F.
When will the DG room normal exhaust fan auto-start?
Anytime its respective room temperature is greater than 105 degrees F
When should the clean/new fuel filters be selected on the DG?
Approx. 10 psid
What are the injection pump(s) cooled by?
constant flow of fuel oil
Where does the DG fuel oil day tank overflow go?
Back to the DG Fuel Oil storage tank
What does the crankshaft in the DG do?
Coverts the reciprocation motion of the piston/connecting rods to rotational motion to drive the generator and auxiliary equipment.
What do the camshafts on the DG do?
operate the fuel injection pumps and intake and exhaust valves to admit fuel and air into the cylinders and to discharge exhaust gases.
What causes a generator differential?
When current into a generator winding is not equal to the current leaving that winding.
When will the low engine oil pressure shutdown be bypassed?
20 seconds during startup and during shutdown when
If we lose control air to the DG, can the diesel still start?
Yes. The fuel control cylinder requires air to turn “off” fuel. In this case the fuel control cylinder will always be “on”.
What is a Blackout condition defined as?
- Loss of off-site power
- Main Generator trip
- Both DG’s failed to start or failed to load onto the bus
What supplies power to the Diesel Fuel oil transfer pumps?
PHA/PHB
Where do the DG JW and LO circ pumps get power from?
PHA/PHB
At what pressure do we get a DG engine lube oil pressure alarm/trip?
Alarm- 35 psig
Trip- 30 psig
When will we get a JW high temperature trip?
205 degrees F
If the DG would be running and we lose control air, what would be the only mechanical automatic trip that would trip the DG?
Overspeed shutdown butterfly valve (660 RPM)
Explain the Fuel cylinder on a diesel start signal.
- Off air is vented and “On” air is applied to the fuel cylinder and it fully shortens, thus positioning the fuel racks in the “full fuel position” or maximum.
What does the injection pump do?
meter fuel according to engine load and deliver it to the injectors in timed relation with the engine firing order
What do the fuel injectors do?
spray fuel into the cylinder where it is ignited by heat of compression
What is some OE with painting and the DG?
Paint on the linkage of the jerk pump. Causes additional unneeded resistance on the pump.
What is some OE with the DG first out and system reset button?
Button was pushed while restoring the DG. Do not push the DG first out and system reset if there are any DG trips or alarms in, unless directed by the CRS/SM.
What is the mission time for the Emergency Diesel Generators at PV?
7 days
What is the mission time of the Emergency DG Fuel system.?
Also 7 days
Explain how the DG starts a SIAS and AFAS?
In the emergency mode in a “no load” standby.
Explain the what the DG fuel cooler is cooling?
Actually cooling the bypass flow that is going back to the FOST. We don’t want pressure in the FOST raising. Which would be caused by the temperature rise.
How does the turbocharger improve efficiency?
Delivering more oxygen to the engine and using exhaust air to drive the turbine
