Diencephalon Flashcards
1
Q
Diencephalon
A
- “between brain”
- between brainstem and cerebrum
- four main subdivisions
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
- epithalamus
- subthalmus
2
Q
Thalamus
A
- largest portion
- relay station where info is first processed
- consciousness, alertness, and attention
- medial geniculate body
- lateral geniculate body
3
Q
Medial geniculate body
A
- swelling on the posterior surface of thalamus, forms auditory pathway, receives input from inferior colliculus
4
Q
Lateral geniculate body
A
- part of the visual pathway, receives input from superior colliculus
5
Q
Hypothalamus
A
- homeostasis
- autonomic function
- feeding
- drinking
- temperature control
- emotions
- lies below thalamus
6
Q
Hypothalamus - 2
A
- optic chiasm (part of nerve containing visual info)
- mammilary body (lies below optic chiasm)
- tuber cinerium
- primary hypothalamus function is processing visceral information
- damage leads to anorexia, hyperphagia
- controls endocrine system
- regulates pituitary gland
- controls cells in adenohypophysis endocrine cells, and influences hormone releasal
- controls ANS - posterior portion of hypothalamus controls sympathetic nervous system
7
Q
Pituitary gland
A
- hypophysis
- swelling at base of hypothalamus
- sits in body cavity called sella turcica
- covered by fluid called sellar diaphragm
- large anterior lobe called adenohypophasis
8
Q
Adenohypophasis
A
- anterior part of pituitary gland
9
Q
Neurohypophysis
A
- posterior part of pituitary gland
- extension of hypothalamus
10
Q
Epithalamus
A
- above thalamus, three sub-structures
- Pineal body/gland
- Stria medullares body/gland
- – circadian rhythm
- Habenula body/gland
11
Q
Subthalamus
A
- caudal to diencephalon with 3 main structures
- Fields of Forel
- Zona Incerta
- Subthalamuc Nucleus
- –Connected to globus pallidus
- –receives fibers from motor corteces
12
Q
Brian Stem
A
- midbrain
- pons
- medulla oblongata
