Cell Types in Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
Theodor Schwann
A
- all tissues made of microscopic units called cells
- Cell Theory
2
Q
Two classes of cells
A
- Neurons
- Glial Cells
3
Q
Neurons
A
- Information processing agents
- 100 billion neurons
- Neuron has three parts
- –cell body (soma)
- –dendrites (extensions)
- –axon (long arm)
4
Q
Cell body
A
- contains cytoplasm and organelles
- endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, mitochondria, nissl body, and neurofibrils
5
Q
Dendrites
A
- extensions from cell body
- has spines
- communicates through them
6
Q
Axon
A
- all neurons have one axon
- transfers information away from cell body
- extends up to 1 meter
- covered in myelin sheath
- three parts
- –axon hillock (beginning)
- –axon proper (middle)
- –axoxn terminal/terminal bouton (end)
7
Q
Myelin Sheath
A
- surrounds axon and provides insulation
- interrupted at intervals called “Nodes of Ranvier”
- nonmyelinated parts called trigger zone/initial segment
8
Q
Long Axon
A
- Golgi Type I
9
Q
Short Axon
A
- Golgi Type II
10
Q
Axon terminal
A
- swollen disc containing synaptic vesicles
- terminal contacts with other neurons pass information
- has synapse
11
Q
Synapse
A
- gap between synapse and neuron = synaptic cleft (Sherrington - neurophysiology)
- transfer of information from one neuron to another is synaptic transmission
- synaptic contact innervates the other neuron
