What are the 2 recess of the diaphragm?
Costodiaphragmatic and costomediastinal recesses
What is the function of the recess in the diaphragm?
Assist lung expansion during deep inspiration
What are the attachments of the diaphragm?
Sternal - diploid process
Costal - lower 6 cartilages
Vertebral - left and right crus
What are the attachments of the crus muscles?
Right - L1-L3
Left - L1-L2
The lumbocostal cartilages
Where is the aortic opening and what does it transmit?
T12 - aorta, azygous vein, thoracic duct and sympathetic chain
What can be found leaving the diaphragm at T10?
Oesophagus and vagus nerve
Where is the caval opening and what does it transmit?
T8 - inferior vena can, right phrenic nerve
What is the motor innervation of the diaphragm?
Phrenic nerve (C3,4,5)
What is the sensory innervation of the diaphragm?
Centrally - phrenic nerve
Laterally - Lower 5 intercostal nerves
What are the functions of the diaphragm? (3)
Muscle of ventilation
Aids maculation, defection, parturition
Aids lifting
What forms the anterior abdominal wall?
1 central and 3 lateral muscles
Rectus abdominus
External oblique, internal oblique, transversus abdominus.
