Abdominal wall, peritoneum, abdominal contents Flashcards
What do the transverse tendinous bands represent?
Different intercostal nerve innervation
What are the attachments of the rectus abdominus?
Between the ribcage and the pubic bone
What are the attachments of the external oblique?
Attaches to the lower 8 ribs.
Aponeurosis merges with the rectus abdominus aponeurosis.
Attaches to pubic bone.
Aponeurosis merges with inguinal ligament
What are the attachments of the internal oblique?
To the costal margin and aponeurosis merges with the aponeurosis of the rectus abdominus.
To iliac crest.
Posterior attachments to lumbar fascia
What is the function of the lumbar fascia?
Attachments and for protection
What are the attachments of the transverses abdominus?
Lowest 6 vertebra
Lumbar fascia
Inguinal ligament
What is the rectus sheath?
Aponeurosis of the transverse abdominal and internal and external oblique
What is the function of the transversus fascia?
Provide strength and protect abdominal contents
In what direction does rectus abdominus contract?
Vertically up and down
In what direction does external oblique contract?
Inward and downwards
In what direction does internal obqlie contract?
Inward and upwards
In what direction does transverses abdominus contract?
Horizontally inward
What are the functions of the abdominal wall muscles?
Trunk movement, abdominal pressure regulation, expiration, resist shape change
How do the abdominal wall muscles assist expiration?
During vigorous ventilation. Allows recall which pulls thoracic cage downwards this allows for the next inspiration
What innervates the abdominal wall muscles?
Intercostal nerves from T7-L1
How do the intercostal nerves enter the muscles?
Between inferior oblique and transverses abdominus
What is peritoneum?
Serous membrane covering the abdominal contents
What are the 2 layers of the peritoneum?
Visceral and parietal peritoneum
What is the function of the peritoneum?
Provides motility, fixes organs in place and has an immune function
What are mesenteries and what are their function?
Peritoneal folds.
Carry blood to and from the gut
What is the difference between intra-peritoneal and retroperitoneal organs?
Intra - fully covered
retro - sit behind it
What are the peritoneal ligaments?
Mesenteries
What is the omentum, how does it divide the abdominal cavity?
Large peritoneal ligament.
Greater and lesser omentum divide it into the greater and lesser sacs
What is the greater sac divided into?
Supracolic and infracolic compartments
